What the Solar Eclipse Means for your Dog

August 21, 2017

Today is the big day of the long-awaited solar eclipse! Many are eagerly anticipating this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event, and some have even traveled to states that offer a full view of the moon completely covering the sun so they can get the true experience.

There has been a lot of buzz about what to do with your pets today, specifically dogs since they are typically outdoors. Rest assured that you don't need to take any extra precautionary measures today for your dogs!

The reason dogs don't need special eye protection today to prevent damage from the eclipse is because they don't look directly at the sun. Because it is not typical dog (or any animal) behavior to look directly into bright light, we don't have to worry about them damaging their eyes. Dogs won't stare at directly at the sun on any day, really.

With that said, however, do make sure that your dog is on a leash at all times today.

Dogs are greatly influenced by our emotions and mood, so if we get excited they might "look" to see what all the fuss is about. If you are planning on watching the eclipse, make sure you have proper eye protection and viewing equipment if you are using binoculars or a telescope.

Most importantly, ENJOY what is bound to be one of the most breathtaking things we will ever see!
